FAHGMU TAVI Rejuvenates a 78-Year-Old Person in Seconds

    On January 13, the transcatheter aortic valve was successfully implanted into a 78-year-old patient with severe cardiac valve disease by TAVI in the First Affiliated Hospital of GMU (FAHGMU).
 

    The operation was coordinated by Professor Liu Ziyou and Professor Zhong Yiming of the TAVI team of FAHGMU. With the assistance of Professor Wei Lai of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, the operation was carried out in conjunction with specialists in cardiac surgery, cardiology, anesthesia, interventional therapy and ultrasound of the FAHGMU. During the operation, multi-disciplinary high quality seamless docking, cardiologists use pacemakers to induce ventricular tachycardia, temporarily stop effective cardiac ejection, and gain valuable 5 seconds. Within the 5 seconds, the surgeon successfully implanted the artificial valve into the valve orifice and immediately restored the heart to normal beating. The operation was completed in less than two hours. At present, the female patient with surname Lin has been transferred to the general ward for further rehabilitation treatment.
    The 78-year-old lady Lin often suffers from chest pain accompanied by tightness of the chest after exercise. Over past years, she has had four syncopes. Color Doppler echocardiography showed aortic stenosis and aortic regurgitation, and BNP, an indicator of heart failure, was more than 200 times than the normal one. It was diagnosed as valvular heart disease and was in the late stage of aortic valve disease. After full demonstration, experts decided to do the TAVI for this patient, which is the only way to save her life.
    According to Dr. Liu Ziyou, a cardiac surgeon in the FAHGMU, TAVI via apex is the latest technology in the field of heart and blood vessels. At present, only a few heart centers in China can carry out this technology.
